September 2010

  • Four of our students hired for the House of Commons Page Program

    Mireille Boivin, Vanessa Russell and Chantal Elikplim A Sordzi from the ISHS, and Zoé Campbell from the SHK, are among the forty new pages in the House of Commons. The pages take on various supportive tasks, attend debates and link members to their Hill offices. For these students, this year will be an opportunity to learn about the House of Commons while witnessing the legislative process first hand.

A_O'Connor
  • Professor in the School of Nursing, Annette O'Connor has been appointed Distinguished University Professor in 2009-2010. This title is conferred to faculty members in recognition of exceptional scholarly achievement, pre-eminence in a particular field of knowledge and a solid teaching record.

April 2010

  • A graduate from the University of Ottawa and employee since 2005, Sonia Fournier is the Assistant Academic Advisor at the Undergraduate Studies Office of the Faculty since may 2008.
Already recipient of the 2009 Administrative Staff Award of Excellence of the Faculty, she was recently awarded with the 2009 Administrative Staff Award of Excellence of the University. Congratulations Sonia !

 

  • Academic Assistant at the Graduate Studies Office of the Faculty since 1996, Lise O'Reilly has been a University's employee for 37 years. " When I first started to work for the School of Human Kinetics,
we only had 35 students in our program, and now they are more than 150 !" Lise has just been awarded with the 2009 Administrative Staff Award of Excellence of the University. Congratulations Lise !

Christine Allen
  • Student in Master of physiotherapy and fifth year captain of the Gee-Gees hockey team, Christine Allen has been nominated by the Quebec conference for the Marion Hillard Award of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The Award is presented to reward excellence in the student-athlete. The recipient exhibits
outstanding achievement in three areas: hockey, academics and community involvement. Christine has decided to serve her community with children "When I was a child, no female hockey player encouraged me. I would have loved it ". She has been trying to make hockey more popular among girls. Unfortunately Christine receive the award, but one should know that she was among only 4 candidates across Canada. Congratulations Christine !

Marilou Gagnon
  • New elected Quebec representative on the executive board of the Canadian Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (CANAC), Marilou Gagnon, assistant professor at the school of nursing, has successfully defended her

doctoral thesis on December 9th.  In the upcoming year, she will be completing her postdoctoral studies with Act-Up Paris, a community-based organization known for its social and political involvement in the field of HIV/AIDS. After her return in March, she will be pursuing her research on HIV/AIDS while working with Professor Namaste, a sociologist at the Simone de Beauvoir Institute (Concordia University).

  • The Faculty of Health Sciences is certainly making its presence felt in Gee-Gees varsity sports! Twelve of the 19 players on the women's hockey team come from Health Sciences, including captain Christine Allen, who's doing her master's in physiotherapy.  What's more, all three schools at the Faculty—Nursing, Human Kinetics and Rehabilitation Sciences—as well as the health sciences program are represented on the squad.

Brad Sinopoli

    Athlete of the week (football)
    Third-year quarterback Brad Sinopoli had a 435-yard game on Saturday to give the Gee-Gees a 27-25 victory at Laurier.
    The Peterborough, Ont., native was 23-35 with 341 yards passing, including touchdown passes to Steven Hughes and Alex Fortier-Labonté.
    Sinopoli, a third-year Human Kinetics major at the Faculty of Health Sciences, also added 94 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 29-yard rush to the end zone late in the second half for a touchdown.


 

Elise Desjardins


  • Monday, October 4
    Athlete of the week (soccer)
    Fourth-year midfielder Élise Desjardins scored two goals in two games this weekend, including the game-winning goal on Sunday versus Nipissing.
    The Cumberland, Ont., native was one of seven players who scored a goal on Saturday when the Gee-Gees defeated Laurentian 7-0.
    Desjardins, a Human Kinetics major at the Faculty of Health Sciences, scored again in the 72nd minute of play on Sunday to give the team their eighth victory of the season by a score of 4-1 over Nipissing.

Elizabeth Fitzpatrick
  • Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, assistant professor at the School of Rehabilitation Sciences just received a CIHR New Investigator Award for her project "Towards an Understanding of the Consequences of Mild Bilateral and Unilateral Childhood Hearing Loss". She was ranked second out of twenty seven candiddates in the allied health professionnals category.  Congratulations Elizabeth !

  • Julie Chartrand, PhD in Nursing student is the recipient of the F. Banting and C. Best Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral Award from CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research).  Congratulations Julie !

  • Congratulations to our Faculty colleague Sylvie Corbeil, staff member at the School of Nursing, who has won the University of Ottawa Award of Excellence for Management and Professionals. Sylvie will receive her award on May 4th at the Founders' Breakfast.
