  • In memoriam: Abdel Majid
    El-Amine (BHSc 2010)


    The Faculty of Health Sciences
    is saddened by the news of alumna Abdel Majid El-Amine’s passing. Abdel Majid died in a tragic car accident on August 1.

  • HIV Therapies Provide Near Normal Lifespan in Africa

    Professor Edward Mills, PhD, of the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences, is the principal investigator of a landmark study by the University of Ottawa and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) that shows that patients in Africa receiving combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) for HIV can expect to live a near normal lifespan.   • Pan-Canadian Health Human Resources Network awarded funds for innovative virtual infrastructure

    The Pan Canadian Health Human Resources Network (CHHRN), co-led by professor Ivy Lynn Bourgeault of the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences, has been awarded funding totalling $600,000 for the creation of a virtual infrastructure enabling participants to share health human resources (HHR) knowledge, innovation and promising practices.   • Professor Jeff Jutai Élizabeth Bryuyère Research Institute Scientist of the Month

    During the month of June, the Élizabeth Bruyère Research Institute (ÉBRI) featured Professor Jeff Jutai, of the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences who's research interests include factors that affect the outcomes of using assistive technology devices, including how devices are prescribed and how users are educated on their usage. In the video, Professor Jutai and his research assistants tell us about their research projects, why they are important, what kind of impact they will have on health care services, and much more.   • This spring, more than 900 FHS graduates received a diploma, most of whom attended the traditional Convocation ceremonies in Southam Hall of the National Arts Centre today, June 14, 2011.

    Among the attendees was Nicholas Valela, who is graduating from the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences after an exemplary journey at the FHS. Read more »

  • Outstanding performance by the Ontario Health Sciences Student Association (OHSSA) at the Ontario Health Team Challenge

    The team, made up of students from the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College, tied for second place with the University of Toronto. At the seventh annual National Health Sciences Students Association (NaSSA) Conference, four members of the OHSSA were also elected to next year's NaSSA executive committee (out of a total of eight positions), a noteworthy representation of 50%.

    More than 300 students from the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences faced the cold with professors and personnel from the Faculty of Health Sciences for the annual HSS Chills BBQ organised by the student association.     Careers in health: keeping an eye on tomorrow

    Health Sciences Career Fair

    More than 200 eager students from the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences gathered on Saturday January 22nd for the Health Sciences Career Fair organized by their student association. Greeted by the Dean of the Faculty, Dr Denis Prud’homme, the School’s director Linda Garcia and many professors, the students explored a wide array of booths presenting graduate studies programs and careers in health.

    The Fair was highlighted by a special presentation by the Hon. Monique Bégin, an important figure in politics, health and women’s rights and former Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences (1990-1997). The overview of her career undoubtedly sparked in them an enthusiasm for a future in health sciences.

    Professor Ivy-Lynn Bourgeault, Ph.D. examines the role of migrant care workers in aging societies

    Over the past decade, the number of live-in foreign caregivers entering Canada has increased by 400 per cent. The International Organization for Migration, which members include Ivy-Lynn Bourgeault, Ph.D., Full Professor in the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, looked at four western democracies - Canada, the United States, Britain and Ireland - to see how they are dealing with the changing face of elder care.     Professor Raywat Deonandan, Ph.D. makes the front page of the Ottawa Citizen

    In an Ottawa Citizen article exposing how more and more infertile Canadians are seeking fertility services abroad that would carry fines of up to $500,000 and 10 years in jail at home, Raywat Deonandan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, says the use of Indian surrogates by Canadian couples is raising many ethical questions. Professor Deonandan's major research focus concerns the epidemiology and ethics of assisted human reproduction, with special attention to international reproductive tourism, particularly the provision of surrogacy services from the Global South to clients from wealthier nations.     Professor Sanni Yaya, Ph.D., Assistant Director, Undergraduate Studies in the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, participated in the publication of a new book that presents health-related problems in Third World countries. About the book (French only).

    In a special 120-page edition celebrating the 30th anniversary of Découvrir, the journal published by the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS), the editorial team has assembled an array of contributors who share their insights into both the past and the future of the world of research. Professor Yaya is among the 30 luminaries invited to take part in the exercise. Read his reflections on the weighty issue that is the phenomenal growth of biomedicine and its impact on society.     Farwa Malik, 4th year student, is the recipient of the Justice Emmett Hall Foundation’s Student Essay Competition. Her essay, “The READ Model: Renewing and Sustaining Canadian Healthcare” won an award of $1,000 in the undergraduate category. Congratulations Farwa !

    Conference of Pr. Donald W. Light
    Lokey Visiting Professor at Stanford University, professor of comparative health care at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Donald Light is the founding fellow of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. He has received the William Foote Whyte distinguished career award for applied sociology. His conference entitled:

    What will Canada's Donation to Save Poor Children Achieve ? Promises and Realities of the Advance Market Commitment

    Canadians have given generously to a grand scheme that promises to save 7 million children from death by making pneumococcal vaccines available at affordable prices. But Medecin sans Frontiers, Oxfam, and concerned experts believe the AMC scheme will send 2/3rds of the money to extra profits on blockbuster vaccines, rather than to saving children. This talk will explain why.

    Official launch of the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences
    The new School of the Faculty has been officially born today in the presence of Sylvie Lauzon, Associate Vice-President Academic, Denis Prud'homme, Dean of the Faculty, Linda Garcia and Sanni Yaya, respectively Director and Acting Director of the School. Read the press release.
  • The University of Ottawa Senate recently approved the request for the creation of a new school at the Faculty of Health Sciences which will be officially named: Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences (ISHS). The acting director of the new School is Professor Sanni Yaya.  To celebrate the event, the students’ association of the new school is organizing an outside BBQ on Tuesday, February 9 at 43, Templeton. For more details: president@hssuottawa.ca. The new school will be officially launched later in March.
  • $1.9M has been awarded from the Federal CBRNE Research Technology Initiative to a team of researchers from the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences. Tracey O’Sullivan (PI), Sanni Yaya, Linda Garcia and Jeff Jutai are among the 8 co-investigators for the EnRiCH project which focuses on enhancing resilience among high risk populations to maximize disaster preparedness, response and recovery. The team has partnered with Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), Nova Scotia Emergency and Social Services, and the Canadian Red Cross to conduct this study.
  • Professor Yaya has been appointed to the International Scientific Board of the 4th PLRS Colloquia which will take place next spring in Ottawa.
