Unfortunately, the arrival of winter is followed by an increase in visits to hospital emergency departments by young people arriving with head injuries resulting from winter activities. Helmets are known to reduce the risk of head injury; however, with so many helmet options available today, which is the best one?

Hockey leaders met in Ottawa to talk about sport safety, particularly concussions. As part of this first summit, representatives of major hockey organizations, including the NHL, Hockey Canada and the International Ice Hockey Federation, will discuss concussions with experts such as Professor Blaine Hoshizaki, PhD, from the School of Human Kinetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, whose research into head injuries suffered by athletes is recognized worldwide. As the Government of Canada’s health research investment agency, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) enables the creation of evidence-based knowledge and its transformation into a stronger, patient-oriented healthcare system. This year, CIHR is funding two operating grants in the Faculty of Health Sciences to do just that. Read more.

Professor Penny Werthner named among Most Influential Women of 2010
The Faculty of Health Sciences is proud to announce that Penny Werthner, PhD, Associate Professor in the School of Human Kinetics, has been named among the most influential women of 2010 by the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity. Professor Werthner works with a number of national coaches and olympic teams. In particular, she worked with Alexandre Bilodeau, gold medalist at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. She was also named among the most influential women of 2008.
