Definition

The definition of a special student is an individual permitted by the University to register for undergraduate courses, for credit or as an auditor, without seeking a degree, diploma or certificate from the University.

Policy Regarding Special Students

Registration for courses offered by the Bachelors’ program of Nutrition Sciences is permitted, on the basis of available space, for the following categories of special students:

  • Professional Certification (with a letter from a professional association)
  • Transfer of Credits (with a Letter of Permission or a formal written agreement from the home institution)
  • Upgrading (with proof of a university degree)

The Bachelors’ program of Nutrition Sciences will not accept registrations from special students who cannot provide proof that they meet the normal admission requirements for regular students.

Professional certification

This category is for those wishing to meet the certification requirements of a professional association by following university courses. A letter from the association must be presented at the time of admission. Status may be full-time or part-time depending on course load.

Transfer of credit

This category refers to individuals seeking a degree, diploma or certificate from another university or post-secondary institution, which allows them to register for courses at the University of Ottawa. Registrants in this category must present a Letter of Permission or written agreement from their home institution. Status is full-time or part-time depending on the course load authorized by the home institution.

Upgrading

The upgrading category accommodates persons who already hold a university degree and wish to update, improve or extend their knowledge. Proof of a prior degree is required upon registration. Status can be full-time or part-time depending on course load.
