Dr. Ollie Jay

Ollie Jay is an Associate Professor in the field of exercise and environmental physiology at the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa, ON, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in Ergonomics (thermal physiology) from Loughborough University, UK in 2002. His thesis focused on assisting the development of the European Union working standard ISO/DIS 13732-3) that determines exposure limits for workers operating in cold environments. Following his doctorate, he (read more...)

Matthew Cramer

Matthew Cramer (PhD Candidate)

My research interests lie in the interaction between exercise and the environment, particularly acclimation/acclimatization, limitations to endurance performance, and heat balance modelling. I completed a masters degree at the University of Sydney, studying sport performance in 2008. In 2009 I undertook a year-long internship at the Australian Institute of Sport in the Department of Physiology. In addition to physiological testing of athletes I assisted with research projects, (read more...)

Nathan Morris

Nathan Morris (MSc Student)

Nathan was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and moved to Ottawa in 2007 to do his B.Sc. in Human Kinetics. He first became involved in the Thermal Ergonomics Laboratory as a 4th year student, doing an undergraduate research project under the supervision of Dr. Ollie Jay. The project focused on comparing different sweat collection techniques in order to validate their results. Nathan decided to continue his studies with Dr. Jay and started his M.Sc. in September of 2011. His master (read more...)

Sheila Dervis

Sheila Dervis (MSc Student)

Bachelor of Science in Honours Kinesiology & Minor in French – University of Waterloo (2011)
My thesis project will focus on the differences in thermoregulatory responses during exercise between people with very diverse morphology. More specifically, we will investigate differences in core temperature change and heat dissipation during exercise between obese and lean participants. (read more...)

Jovana Smoljanic

Jovana Smoljanic (MSc Student)

Jovana received her B.Sc. in Human Kinetics degree at the University of Ottawa in June 2011. She started her M.Sc. thesis in September 2011 under the supervision of Dr. Ollie Jay. Her research will focus on how thermoregulatory responses are influenced by aerobic fitness.
Jovana is a certified exercise physiologist (CSEP-CEP) and has worked in both a strength and conditioning setting with elite athletes and a rehabilitation setting. She is currently the (read more...)
