Statistical Consulting Service Grants

Description

The purpose of these grants is to provide professional statistical consulting services to Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) researchers who need it to prepare an application for external funding. The services are offered by the Clinical Research Unit at CHEO, which has a memorandum of agreement with the FHS. It is expected that the statistical consulting services will enable researchers to prepare solid applications with excellent research protocols and designs as well as appropriate statistical methods, sample size, statistical power, etc. The expectation is that an application be submitted to an external peer-reviewed funding agency within twelve (12) months of this award.

The FHS Statistical Consulting Services Grant may cover parts or the totality of the professional statistical consulting services received by the researcher. A researcher may receive one Statistical Consulting Services Grant (up to $500) per application to an external peer-reviewed funding agency, with a maximum of two Statistical Consulting Services Grants per year (i.e., between June 1st of one year and May 31st of the following year). Note that the current consulting services rate is $75 per hour.

Applicant Eligibility

The Statistical Consulting Services Grants are intended for professors who are full-time tenured or tenure-track FHS faculty members. After receiving one Statistical Consulting Services Grant, a researcher must submit to the Vice-Dean Research (Guindon Hall, room 3028F, extension 1398,  fssrecherche@uottawa.ca) a notice of submission of the corresponding application to an external peer-reviewed funding agency prior to being eligible for another Statistical Consulting Services Grant.

Available Statistical Consulting Services

The FHS Statistical Consulting Services Grants are not intended for data entry and statistical analysis. Rather, they are intended for the preparation of an application and are focused on the following types of services:

  • Advice regarding the preparation of research protocols;
  • Advice regarding the best methods to be used (including research design, measurement instruments, response rate, response burden issues, etc.);
  • Advice regarding the statistics that will be used (including sample size, statistical power, statistical methods, efficiency, etc.);
  • Advice regarding the lay out of the survey; and/or
  • Other similar advice.

The above-mentioned services are available in both French and English. The FHS shall not be responsible financially or in any way for the arrangements made between its researchers for services beyond the scope of the FHS Statistical Consulting Services Grants.

Submission Deadline

Applications for a FHS Statistical Consulting Services Grant may be submitted at any time at the Vice-Dean Research Office located at Guindon Hall, Room 3028F,extension 1398,  fssrecherche@uottawa.ca.

Application Procedure

Applicants to the FHS Statistical Consulting Services Grants must follow this procedure:

  1. Fill out Part 1 of the Statistical Consulting Services Form

  2. Contact the CRU (www.cheori.org/cru) to arrange an initial consultation where an estimate for services will be provided and where Part 2 of the Statistical Consulting Services Form will be filled out.
  3. Forward a 500-word summary of the grant application as well as the paper version of the Statistical Consultation Services Form to the FHS Vice-Dean (Research, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies) at the Research Office, Room 3028F Guindon Hall, extension 1398,  fssrecherche@uottawa.ca. .

Adjudication Process

The Vice-Dean (Research, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies) will allocate Statistical Consulting Services Grants (maximum of $500) using the following criteria: the importance of the services for the researchers' grant application; the possibility that the grant application will be significantly improved and funded. The decisions concerning the applications will be communicated within two weeks of receipt of complete applications. Decisions will be communicated using Part 3 of the Statistical Consulting Services Form. This form will be returned to the applicant.

Procedures for Applicants

Following receipt of a Statistical Consulting Services Grant, the applicant will be invited to contact the CRG to receive the consulting services. Granted the limited staff of the CRG and granted the number of faculty members potentially using the consulting services, researchers must allow reasonable time between the time they submit their request (a Statistical Consulting Services Form approved and signed by the Vice-Dean Research, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies) and the time the consulting services will be completed.

CRG Modalities

  • The CRG reserves the right to refuse its offer of consulting services if it is felt that the requested services would take too much time or are outside of the available expertise.
  • CRG will assist researchers at the rate of $75 per hour, with a minimum billing of 30 minutes per contact. CRG agrees to stay within the estimated cost that has been approved by the Vice-Dean (Research, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). If it is felt that the estimated cost will be surpassed by more than $100, then a verbal authorization will be required from the Vice-Dean (Research, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies) prior to continuing the provision of services. The CRG also agrees to provide the researcher with a written report of its services. This written report will be made on Part 4 of the Statistical Consulting Services Form.
  • A separate invoice will be submitted by CRG to the FHS for services offered to each applicant. Each invoice will indicate whether it covers partial or final payment. Every 3 (three) months, CRG will send the invoices for completed services to the FHS Vice-Dean (Research, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). Payment will be due to CRG 30 (thirty) days after the date of the invoice.
