Sweet success: Most Influential Poster award

Wendy Gifford

Assistant professor Wendy Gifford (pictured above) and professor Barbara Davies, both from the School of Nursing at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Health Sciences, brought home the award for the most influential poster presentation at KU11, an international Knowledge Utilization Colloquium that took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from June 14 to 16. Gifford and Davies designed their poster to look like the front page of a newspaper, which they named KU11 NEWS. The newspaper's headline story featured the results of Gifford and Davies' research in the area of nursing care for patients with diabetic foot ulcers.

"The headline news was very effective at catching people's attention," says Gifford. She and Davies also added a touch of sweetness to their presentation: "We offered Canadian chocolates to participants if they filled out a survey card commenting on one of three knowledge utilization issues:  cost, management and leadership."

The invitational colloquium provided a forum for capacity building and discussing critical questions among knowledge utilization researchers, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows from over 12 countries, including England, Wales, Sweden, the United States, Switzerland, Holland and Australia. There were three key themes at this year's colloquium: blended collaborative approaches to implementation; sustainability; and the impact of knowledge on the patient, practitioner, team, organization and wider policy environments.
