BiographyDr. Toman is both a professional nurse and professional historian whose primary research focus is the history of health care, and specifically, the history of Canadian nursing. Her dissertation received the 2003 Governor General's Gold Medal for outstanding doctoral thesis in the Humanities at the University of Ottawa. The Canadian Historical Association awarded her the Hilda B. Neatby prize for the best English language article on Canadian women’s history in 2007. Her practice background includes cardiovascular critical care nursing and clinical teaching in the areas of general surgery and neurosciences. Previous research includes studies on patient activity progression post-myocardial infarction, heart failure, and patient education as well as historical research on medical technology and nurses, scientific management, blood transfusion and nurses, and military nurses of the First and Second World Wars. She was guest curator for the Canadian Museum of Civilization special exhibition on Canadian nursing history (2005) and consultant to the Canadian War Museum related to exhibits on Canadian military nursing history. Dr. Toman has worked in the United States, Puerto Rico, and both western and central Canada. |
