Dawn Stacey

Biography

Dr. Dawn Stacey was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing in July 2005 and Associate Professor in May 2010. She won the 2009 Young Researcher Award for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Stacey is a member of the Faculty of Graduate and Post-doctoral Studies at the University of Ottawa, Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, academic appointee at The Ottawa Hospital, and a member of the Nursing Best Practice Research Unit. In June 2010, she became Director of the Patient Decision Aids Research Group at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

From 1991 to 2001, Dr. Stacey was responsible for patient education and continuing education for nurses at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre. In addition to oncology nursing, she has worked as a nurse in pediatrics, clinical trials, and at camp. Her doctoral dissertation was a qualitative case study with an embedded randomized controlled trial to evaluate an implementation intervention to enhance decision support by call centre nurses for callers facing values-sensitive health decisions.

Dr. Stacey lectures extensively both nationally and internationally on various aspects of patient decision support,  knowledge translation, oncology nursing, and telephone consultation. She is teaching in the post- diploma baccalaureate nursing program, as well as teaching and supervising students in graduate programs in nursing and population health. Dr. Stacey is involved in leading and/or participating as a co-investigator on several interdisciplinary research projects that focus on: a) improving the quality of knowledge translation tools that enhance patient and health service outcomes; b) evaluating interventions to improve interprofessional team’s shared decision making skills; c) determining effective strategies to implement knowledge translation tools and interventions to facilitate shared decision making in everyday practice, and d) development, evaluation, and quality appraisal of patient decision aids. She is the principal-investigator on the Cochrane Review of Patient Decision Aids, co-investigator on the Cochrane Review of Interventions to Improve the Adoption of Shared Decision Making, and co–chair of the International Patient Decision Aid Standards Collaboration (IPDAS). Her research is conducted in Canada, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Chile.
