Dress Code

The student must at all times project a professional image.

Unless the clinical site requires a specific dress code or uniform, the student must abide by the following details during clinical placements, practical exams and clinical visits.

The dress code includes:

  • Dress pants;
  • A plain shirt (without writing or messages) with long or short sleeves and a collar;
  • Stockings or socks;
  • Closed-toe and low-heeled, non-slip shoes - maximum height of heel 2.5 cm. (1 inch);
  • University program identification badge bearing the student’s name and status.

If indicated by a clinical facility, a clean white lab coat should be worn as well as the above.

It is unprofessional for students to wear the following :

  • Tight or transparent clothing;
  • Jeans (any colour), shorts or short skirts;
  • Camisoles or T-shirts / tops that expose the abdomen;
  • Boots or sandals;
  • Excessive jewellery that affects a client’s, another professional’s or your own safety.
  • Perfume or scented lotions.

Prior to the clinical placement, it is the responsibility of the student to confirm in writing the appropriate dress code with the clinical coordinator / director of the facility. The student should arrive on the first day wearing the appropriate clothing and respect the dress code at all times during the clinical placement.

If the supervisor feels that the student’s appearance does not meet the clinical site’s or University’s dress code criteria the student will be required to change before continuing with the placement. The student will be required to makeup any time missed because of this.

Clinical facilities will provide special uniforms or protective clothing for students, in areas where such garments are required by the Clinical Facility (e.g. Operating rooms, isolation rooms).

Uniform

The student's uniform is navy dress pants and a white blouse or shirt with a collar. The clinical facilities can request that the student wear the student's uniform. If there are any concerns that the student is not adhering to the dress code, the student will have to wear the student's uniform for the duration of the clinical placement.
